Grauman’s Theaters Scores

The Grauman’s Theaters Scores Collection consists of scores and parts for 3,845 orchestrations used in silent film theaters owned by Sid Grauman. Many of the pieces include use markings, likely by composer Rudolph Kopp, conductor Charles Gluck, and conductor/arranger Rodney Sauer. When the music was deaccessioned by Grauman’s theaters, it went first to California Lutheran University and was later acquired by Rodney Sauer of the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, who donated it to the American Music Research Center at the University of Colorado-Boulder. The University holds the physical collection and hosts the digitizations available through SFSMA.

SFSMA has created individual posts for each piece in the collection, and users can search for pieces in it by including “Grauman” or “AMRC” in the search. In addition, users can access the collection through this spreadsheet: Grauman_SFSMA -post types.

This project was supported by funding from the National Archives/National Historical Publications and Records Commission.
